In 2002/2003, Lean activities looked at annual expenditure on externally hired plant. Use of Value Stream Mapping, Pareto Analysis and Cause and Effect techniques enabled a team to deliver net benefits of £51k in the first year. In 2003-2004 a further team looked at procurement process inefficiencies. This has led to the development of a central Procurement Department working from Glasgow and Manchester bases. This enabled all material supply and plant hire to be managed by a small team of Procurement Professionals which has freed-up spend control from £1m to £8m per annum. Supplier and Client relations are now benefiting significantly from these changes.
