Lumley had no previous experience of using Lean techniques but saw how it could harness staff expertise to develop good information systems. In 2005 they followed the Lean Management Thinking Programme and were able to eliminate chase-ups and identified 350 resource hours that could be freed-up each month with use of appropriate IT systems. As a result of their work, Lumley appointed a full-time Director to continue implementing recommendations that could save the company £400k per annum.
