The 80/20 principle is often referred to as the Pareto principle. Pareto was a 19th century Italian economist who used statistics to prove that the majority of errors / issues within an organisation can usually be linked back to a small number of root causes. For example, if you look at the number of suppliers to your organisation, you may have 100s / 1000s but you will find that 80% of your spend will be with a very small number of these. Almost all companies who embark on our Lean programmes will use new and inventive ways of applying Pareto to improve their performance.
